Summary

The City of Medford is now hiring for a Wastewater Supervisor in the Water Reclamation Division of the Public Works Department.

The Wastewater Supervisor is assigned to supervise the Equipment Maintenance functions of an advanced secondary activated sludge sewage treatment plant. This position will ensure compliance with the National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. This position supervises other Water Reclamation Division employees.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Four (4) or more years of work and/or supervisory experience in wastewater treatment; or
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree with in an education concentration in wastewater treatment or related biological/environmental studies field business management, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Must posses the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) grade III or higher Wastewater Operator certificate or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Must be available to provide 24-hour standby coverage one week at a time as part of a rotation.
  • Must be a collaborative leader with the ability to manage multiple complex tasks simultaneously.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience managing preventive maintenance programs.
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting equipment operation and maintenance manuals to develop preventive maintenance schedules for equipment.

Total Annual Compensation Package:

5% differential for Operator Grade IV Oregon State Certificate or Bachelor's Degree in related field.

The anticipated hiring range for this position is $32.37 (first step) to $33.99 or $35.69 (second or third step). Directly related experience and qualifications will be evaluated alongside others who perform work of comparable character as required by Pay Equity Law. Six steps are included in this salary range, allowing opportunity for annual movement through the steps.

  • Supervisesstaff including:assigningwork, providingguidanceandassistance,preparing performanceevaluations, employeedevelopment, hiring, disciplinaryrecommendations,etc.
  • Updates Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manual and ensures staff can access and effectively use the electronic O&M manual.
  • Ensures safe practices and procedures are followed, and provides training and safety programs.
  • Works with administrative support to write and maintain contracts for goods and services; solicits bids, makes purchases, establishes open purchase orders, ensures timely payment of invoices, etc.
  • Assists with the preparation and oversight of the operating and capital improvement budgets.
  • Supervision of Equipment Maintenance:
  • Organizes, develops, and monitors plant equipment maintenance procedures and standards; inspects equipment for condition, state of repair, and service compliance.
  • Studies the use and preventive maintenance of equipment; makes recommendations for increased efficiency; plans and directs equipment repair and or replacement.
  • Reviews service schedules and record keeping for compliance with manufacturing and engineering recommendations.
  • Develops and assists in establishing contracts with vendors, as needed.
  • Supervises landscape maintenance of treatment plant.

Scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director.Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.Must have the ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace.Must be honest and truthful in all tasks and responsibilities.Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.Refer to job description for physical requirements.

Job Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED.
  • Four (4) or more years of work and/or supervisory experience in wastewater treatment; or
  • Graduation froman accredited collegeor universitywith abachelor's degreewithin aneducation concentration inwastewater treatmentorrelated biological/environmentalstudies field business management, and/orequivalentcombinationofeducationand experiencesufficient tosuccessfullyperformtheessential dutiesofthe jobsuchas thoselisted above.
  • Must be available to provide 24-hour standby coverage one week at a time as part of a rotation.
  • Currenttechnical/professional knowledgeof complexprinciples, methods, standards and techniquesassociatedwiththescopeofworkof arecognized profession,suchas:
  • Knowledge of modern wastewater treatment plant design, machinery, equipment, repairs and maintenance, and practices and principles.
  • Knowledge of laboratory analysis principles.

Possession of licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment, such as:

  • Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) grade III or higher Wastewater Operator certificate or ability to obtain within six months of hire. The applicant is responsible for determining eligibility for reciprocity if certified in a state other than Oregon.

Requires possession of a valid driver's license by date of hire. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)).Must maintain acceptable driving record.Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
