Job Description:

Scope of Position

We are seeking a Category Manager to oversee the strategy and execution of initiatives for the General Merchandise and Health and Beauty Care categories for a west-coast grocery retailer.

Responsibilities

Maintain total company sales and margin performance for the department, through effective item selection, pricing, marketing, purchasing, and program creation
Report on performance level in detail to superiors
Forecast department performance for upcoming financial periods
Visit stores to observe merchandising standards are at or above expectation, and to review category product assortment
Maintain ongoing relationships with existing vendors
Negotiate product cost and vendor programs
Pursue new vendor relationships to facilitate improved company sales and profit results
Make purchasing decisions for all stores to maintain and improve established programs
Track trends in consumer consumption to determine which products should be sold
Monitor and manage store inventory levels resulting from purchase decisions
Monitor and manage known loss levels, enhance inventory turns to compensate
Select items for circulars based on deals reports and vendor offers/negotiations
Create and maintain category schematics for all areas
Monitor and set pricing for all categories in the department. Review competition checks
Monitor operations, discuss with store management and report concerns to district managers

Qualifications

High School Diploma required, College Degree preferred
Solid understanding of all grocery departments
Strong leadership aptitude - able to gain employee support
Team-player, strong collaborator with other departments
Excellent communication and presentation skills, written and verbal
Strong math skills
Effective conflict resolution skills
High commitment to customer service
15% estimated travel to local stores, and 4-5 industry tradeshows each year
